Phoneme bingo
Phoneme practice
These phoneme bookmarks allow students to experiment with individual phonemes to create words with the same ending, for example ‘hat, cat, fat’. This activity can be used with younger year levels as an introduction or conclusion activity for a lesson.
Spin a word
The spin a word game involves student creating a spinner to pick a consonant blend. Students must then match the blend with the rest of a word to form a completed word. This game encourage students to blend individual phonemes in a game-like context. This activity can be used in rotations and both small group and individual activities.
Runny Babbit: A Billy Sook
The picture book Runny Babbit teaches students the importance of phoneme manipulation in an engaging and humorous way. Reading this book in the classroom can invite discussions of the importance of using correct phonemes in words and how we can change individual phonemes to create words that make sense. Students can go through the book and try to identify all the words that aren’t really words.
